We’ve all got our own versions of what self-care looks like, but becoming a student of God’s Word should be our upmost priority. Especially as mothers! Diving into the Bible daily is something that is not only essential to growing in our own faith, but it is also essential for personal development and very importantly – our children.

To get the most out of your Bible study, you want to make it something you can enjoy and a time you look forward to.

Bible Journaling has done that for me.

I pick what I want to study, read and meditate over that Scripture, and then I will highlight, underline, and circle any key words that stick out to me. After that, I will listen to what God is speaking into my heart.

Then…the fun part. Make it pretty!

This can mean note taking, coloring, or journaling Scripture that resonates with me. One of my favorite influencers, Audrey Bailey, calls this “worship through creating.” In other words, it’s creating something meaningful to you that ultimately glorifies God. Journaling through my Bible has not only helped me enjoy my time with God even more, but allows me to feel closer to Him.

Now, you may be wondering where to start! If you are new to Bible journaling and aren’t sure what supplies you need, then this post is for you. Bible journaling can be such a fun and creative way to study your Bible, but can also be easily overcomplicated. That is where I come in! A few simple tools can take you a long way and help you get the most out of your study time.

Here is the ultimate guide for beginners, filled with all of the essential Bible journaling supplies you need.

My Must-Have Supplies for Bible Journaling

1. The Bible

Okay, this one is a bit obvious! But I thought I should include what my favorite Bibles are and why. You will want a Bible that has margins large enough for note-taking, and one that is also easy for you to understand. This will help you get the most out of your study. ESV, CSB, NIV or NLT are my go-to versions.

My favorite Bible that I’m currently using is the She Reads Truth Bible. It is filled with beautiful scripture art throughout the text, devotionals geared towards women, and summaries at the beginning of every book along with maps and other great tools. It even comes with a reading guide of what to read in your Bible each week which is SUPER helpful to someone that simply doesn’t know where to start!

2. Bible Tabs

Bible tabs make the world so much easier when navigating through your Bible. I will be the first to say that I do not have all of the books of the Bible memorized in order. I’m working on it, but just not there yet unfortunately. These tabs make it easy to find what book I’m looking for with the names clearly printed on each tab. I love these Bible Tabs by DiverseBee not only because of their aesthetic, but also because they are soft and easy to put on!

They offer a few different styles but the Cappuccino is my favorite!

3. No-Bleed Pens

I have a confession to make. I’m obsessed with pens. I’d even go as far as calling myself a “pen snob” because I am that particular about what pens I write with. You’d be surprised how difficult it is to find the perfect pen. When journaling in your Bible, you may come across pens that smear, dry out, bleed through the pages or simply don’t write well on the texture of the pages.

But I come with good news! After years of searching for the perfect pens, I came across these Pigma Micron Pens. The micro pigment ink creates waterproof and fade proof fine lines, that don’t bleed through thin Bible pages and dry almost instantly. They are perfect for underlining and note taking, but also for detailed drawing. The set comes with six pens. All various tip sizes to fit your needs.

4. Bible Highlighters

While studying your Bible, you may want to highlight key verses, words, or notes, but you’re searching for the perfect highlighter that (like pens) doesn’t bleed through those thin Bible pages. Everyone has their own personal preference for highlighters but these are my favorite because I was specifically on the hunt for neutral colors.

Unlike your typical highlighter that may make the paper feel wet afterwards, these highlighters are designed for Bibles with a crayon-like texture. The application is smooth and dry, and won’t dry out if left uncapped! Not only do I like using them for highlighting, but also for drawing with the trendy earthy tones.

5. Bible Bag

I’d describe myself as a fairly organized person, but my life was made so much easier when I got a Bible Bag. I used to throw all my things into a bag in separate pouches, but finding the perfect bag to kept my essentials organized made a big difference.

I love this one by DiverseBee on Amazon because it’s a great size and is able to fit large or small Bibles (even with tabs). It’s very functional with pockets that can allow you to fit your favorite highlighters, pens, sermon notes, prayer cards, and more. And of course, it’s cute and neutral!
